Schlossberg Caves in Homburg ~ April 1, 2011

The caves were originally part of the Hohenburg Castle, which was destroyed in 1741. The caves were forgotten and rediscovered in the 1930's. During World War II, they were used as shelters. The caves are 12 storeys deep (we only went on level 10, I believe).

(Sorry about the pictures in the caves, they did not turn out so wonderful.)

This was an area used to sleep in WWII, there are holes for the bunk type beds used.

These are the largest man-made caves in Europe.

Bunkers were built after WWII for the government.

Above ground, these are ruins from the Castle.
